Thoreau says it best

A lake is a landscape’s most beautiful and expressive feature. It is Earth’s eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.

Henry David Thoreau in Walden

So enjoyed speaking about the Great Lakes yesterday to about 100 people at Washtenaw Community College.  Heartwarming that so many love the lakes and care about their condition and welfare.  Especially loved having friends Kathe and Susan there.  While I presented technical descriptions of  just  what a lake is, I still think Thoreau says it best.  Agree?

Staying informed

I am giving a lecture today at Washtenaw Community College on the environmental conditions of the Great Lakes.  I promised to post links to help those interested in staying informed about the Great Lakes find resources.

Back in the saddle

I am finally settled in my new city and working on my Great Lakes islands book and more clear about future projects.  Been a very, very long process that continues.

For now I am sharing an island image from my circling of Lake Superior on the U.S. side with my dog Henry in a small motorhome.  This is an island in Minnesota near Grand Portage and within the Grand Portage Indian Reservation.  Lake Superior was unusually calm as you can see.  I took this the morning right before I headed south to return home to southeastern Michigan.  So it was bittersweet.

Layover

20120817-220231.jpg
Out with the old gross leaky freshwater tank and in with the new. Huge job done expertly by Dean O’Brien. Felt he treated my RV as his own, and he was excited as each reconnected hose, fitting, and pipe was secure and tested.

I am doing this on my iPhone and hope the photo of some of what had to come out looks like. Note the mold in tank.

Tomorrow some local errands then to Grand Marais for the night. I hope to catch up here then. Also need to decide whether to continue or head home after the big expense and slight delay and do north shore in 2013.

But now time for a good night’s sleep.
